IKS Winter School in Botswana

SANBio Winter School on IKS Commercialisation
31 July – 3 August 2017
Gaborone, Botswana

Application Deadline: 27 June 2017
Advert Placement Date: 13 June 2017

Background
NEPAD SANBio (Southern Africa Network for Biosciences), supported by the BioFISA II Programme (a Finnish-Southern African Partnership Programme to Strengthen NEPAD SANBio), and the Botswana Innovation Hub are inviting tertiary level students and young professionals in the biosciences sector to participate in the SANBio Winter School on IKS.

Topics and Outline
The Winter School will involve the following topics:
– Bioprospecting and bioinnovation commercialisation
– Agroprocessing of indigenous foods and nutritional products
– Intellectual Property and Indigenous Knowledge Systems

The 4-day programme will include presentations by experts and entrepreneurs as well as practical group work centred on a case study approach where concrete ideas are worked on to develop products and services that could be commercialised. The outcome of the first three days for the winter school participants is an understanding of different aspects and processes involved in commercialising an IKS innovation, culminating in a business or product concept. The final day of the programme will involve site visits to relevant organisations in Gaborone.

The course outline may be subject to minor changes.

How to Apply
Students and young professionals from SANBio member states* are eligible to apply for participation. SANBio will be able to cover the travel and accommodation costs for a limited amount of participants. Potential sponsorship (covering travel and accommodation costs) will be determined on the basis of the information submitted in applications.

Central to the application is providing motivation to participate and an idea/concept involving an IKS technology, product or service that could be commercialised; preference will be given to applicants with an already advanced or at least partially developed concept.

You can apply for participation using the following online form: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GPBRSNM
